So for example, when we launched the business, we didnt have enough money to design and manufacturer all these different SKUs for subscription, because we design everything ourselves. Offering children the right kind of toys, ones that align with these different stages, can set them up for a stronger, healthier future. Rolph urges parents to redefine their expectations around what learning looks like, whether for young children not yet in school or older children missing their friends and routines. And that has since grown kind of quite a bit over time. But how do you go about finding good investors? And so, our flagship offering is a subscription that we call the play kits. Okay. Yeah. And so, we had been kind of using software and messaging to compel people to save enough energy, to take a couple cities off the grid. I would say I wish I understood crypto better, because, not because Im like trying to become a crypto billionaire or something, but it just seems like in the last year or two crypto, NFTs, this whole sort of world has sort of taken over for the way a lot of people are thinking about building businesses. Were constantly creating stuff. Even though she refers to the initial curiosity that led to Lovevery as nerdy, Rolph and Morriss dedication to research is at the core of Loveverys success. Yeah. I was like, Well, I love subscription businesses. This past July the company expanded its line. Jessicas takeaway was that early development experiences wouldnt just happen on their own, she had to create them. Lovevery raised $100 million in its latest funding round, valuing the trendy subscription toy company at more than $800 million and setting it up for an initial public offering in the next two years. So the other thing, I mean when thinking about, I know I was asking about metrics, but have there ever been a subtle tweak that youve done in something thats kind of given you a very surprising outcome? We spend a long time in the developmental stages of this app before we launched it. And that was really an effort that was led by our head of growth marketing, Alex, who had previously been running acquisition at Allbirds and had worked in [inaudible] before that. Which kind of at this stage in scale, for us to see a persistent sort of organic kind of growth going on-. The creation of Lovevery (pronounced "Love-every") began with Jessica, Rod, and an idea. But does that version last? Marketing channels are different in Asia, much more different in Asia than from the US than European ones are from the US. Wow. So, one, this is going to sound the most trite, but its really hard to overstate just the amount of heart and soul that we put into every single product and every piece of content that we publish into the customer experience. I mean I think its admirable folks who are able to bootstrap like huge businesses. How did you know when to have a growth team versus creative versus I know you have engineers, because you have software? Yeah. Investors have been enamored with digitally native and DTC brands lately. You guys sent me some amazing boxes. Got it. After I got this, Im like, Oh, every new friend thats pregnant, theyre going to be getting this. I mean its also such an easy thing to gift and not even have to think about it, because how often do you go to the store and youre picking out a bunch of random things? Youre all going to be asking questions of experts around the same kinds of topics, and then seeing Q&A live with experts. This desire gave her the idea to create a second baby companythis time focused on brain development. And then, once they were born, I was kind of like, Oh, now what? And to me, it even more important time, now theyre on Earth, I dont know know what to do with them. Her work focuses on the cognitive and cultural mechanisms that underly language, literacy, and social-emotional development, as well as bridging research-to-practice connections in early childhood settings and systems. I think kind of if we think about capital structure and how we make that happen financially, weve shared with press that its our goal to take this company public over the next couple of years. And then, came to like paid media, we found really quickly if youre a new brand, its all about social proof. Yeah. I mean the upside is really credibility, and also for people who really believe in your brand, giving them an opportunity to invest in your brand and see it kind of like flourish and see them benefit from that is a great way of alignment with your customer base. And the way in which humans develop is fairly universal., We try to make really great individual products that we can sell in different places. The brands winning are the ones that create high-quality products. This may take some testing and iterating to understand what works and what doesnt. Okay. And then, we kind of take a survey of anything else thats working out there, maybe things that are DIY that we could make safe, baby safe and make ourselves.

And theres nothing like print, so Im just going to say I love print and I love getting regular news. I guess one thing that I would say has been important for us is we have a pretty robust influencer marketing team as well that is reaching out to influencers on Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, et cetera, and kind of making sure that they get Lovevery product that they can experience it so that if they want to, because we dont pay for posts or stories, but if they want to, they can share about their experience. Right? Lovevery, we think of ourselves as an early learning program for children and their parents, right? Generally, when we look at acquisition between 10% and 20% of our subscribers joined because they became aware of the brand due to somebody that they follow. And to create that resonance, it takes research. It was written from the perspective of a parent and what you could do at each stage based on all the science, says Rolph. Best piece of business advice. Book. And thats the way its worked out. I agree. So its come a long way in a short time. I havent heard that happening too often. So Jessica got to work, tinkering to make her own toys and recruiting her close friend Rod Morris to help get these solutions out to other struggling parents. What is this experience going to be for parents?. This year, being a toy retailer is particularly difficult. And so, we always knew we were going to have to raise money. Sure. We also have some individual products that we sell, mainly as an exercise to make people more aware of the brand. Because you have some very good investors and a lot of companies that come on the show, they, sometimes I hear a little hesitancy around getting investors. I think for this company to realize its full potential, it needs to tap into public markets for lots of different reasons, for funding, sure, but also to have an interactive relationship with public markets investors. Rod acknowledges that this may seem like a misplaced expenditure. How big are they? So I guess theres like three phases to how we think about this. So I think were feeling good about TV channels. Newspaper is actually like a great form factor. So-. When it came to marketing and awareness, what that meant was we had limited funds. You mentioned you had 250 employees now? So with that, I want to hear, how did you come up with the idea of Lovevery and what is it? What were some of the learning lessons there jumping from maybe Instagram ads to then connected TV? Its funny because I think when I went into it, I thought this is going to be great, because Im going to set it up so that my wife and her best friend can be in the same city, and Ill have more control over my life because Ill be a founder that are working for somebody else. He was masterful at making things happen and generating results.
Whats one thing you dont understand today but you wish you did? It takes a lot of hard work but it all starts with a complete obsession with creating a brand that you believe in and products that fill a gap in the market. So what I would say is when we think about the subscription and the app, we think of those as all part of one program for families, right? Its kind of a chicken or the egg thing, thinking big and raising money kind of to fund that are important. These everyday items make life a little easier and more fun. This time around, it's an even more personal venture. We find that its Whats interesting is, and maybe you saw this with your oldest is when you give them something that is tied into what theyre wired to be wanting to learn right at that moment, it just becomes like what theyre really, really into, and they get obsessed with it if its like tuning into what they really want to do at that time. This is kind of your area, so maybe if you could touch on that for a bit? And honestly, its the best thing Ive received in the past three years. Seeing babies love our stuff and develop is just so exciting, says Rolph. Cool. And so we started with that and then we invested a great deal into the products themselves. Well, when were talking about Lovevery, the answer is yes and yes. They are also finding more ways to support their customers and the community at-large with free resources, like their new COVID-19 poetry book Doing My Part, which was developed to help children make sense of things like wearing masks. Lots of different kinds of machines and 3D printers and things like that. And you guys were like really a lot higher than the other two. Whats happening? It retails for $140. Yeah. Were getting print of that as well for a while and Im like, This is so much nicer than going somewhere and seeing ads, and then linking all around and one hour later Im reading something that has nothing to do with what I should be looking at anyways.. Jessica wanted to share what she had learned with other parents. In our recent interview, Rod shared how investing in data has developed and driven their brand. We have a pretty large business at this point in the US, and so now that were pretty well established in the US and we have tons of inbound demand coming from international markets, were starting to move into international markets. And numbers dont lielook at which products are being returned and which arent selling. And with more and more parents actively seeking new ways to stimulate their young children at home, Lovevery is set to continue the trend. So we launched a play gym. Today, weve got a very large creative team that does a much better job on this, a very professional growth marketing org. And I think because were investing so much in content and obsessing about that content, we have tremendously high like click-to-open rates when we send emails to customers about their childs developmental stage. And theres always an opportunity to do it better., Before we had made any final product design decisions, we invested a lot of time energy and a lot of our funds into defining the brand. On the other hand, the level of demand were seeing from Asian markets is pretty massive. Cool. The Series C funding round was led by venture firm TCG, with additional money from existing investors Reach Capital, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, Google Ventures and SoGal Ventures. Ciara Fanlo And it changes with every given year. And so, well construct different prototypes. The mother of three knows a thing or two about startups. Completely agree. Hey, everyone. But the flip side is like a subscription business is more predictable than some of these other kinds of businesses. And so, very early on, we did our best to take advantage of kind of other peoples sort of testimonials, posts, articles about us, and I was making our ads on like apps on my iPhone basically. I read the Wall Street Journal every day in paper form, because I want the kids to see that Im like reading a paper and I read the Economist every week. Today, on the show, we have Rod Morris, whos a co-founder and president of Lovevery. And it definitely raises awareness. Its usually pretty good. Through reading the study, Jessica learned that the human brain has about 100 billion nerve cellsall of which are present at birthbut have few links between them. I could see it also having like a big mindset shift too being able to have access to new funds as well, because to me when youre building in such a scrappy way, I think it can also keep your thinking small. And so, a couple of things that we did. The other thing thats different is the spots tend to be kind of like a 32nd spot is kind of sweet spot for connected TV, while on paid social with a 15-second spot, you can often do what you need to do and need to get that done like faster. What are some moonshot that youre taking right now, and then where are you hoping to be? Sometimes they do for a few weeks and then it gets tossed aside. And so, and thats the core. And so, our perspective was investors and investor capital are a strategic asset. The startup also touted its new proprietary, mobile-friendly subscription platform that helped streamline its operations and service subscribers worldwide. So I would say, I would say that. Consistent with their mission, Lovevery brings new parents value with content. To develop a quality relationship with your customers, you need to honor your half of the deal. I mean I dont know. For example, from the very beginning, Lovevery invested in high-quality photography. And its also all about explaining. Was your wife kind of like, Whoa, dont take my best friend and pull her into something that Im not going to be able to have time with her? What were some conversations? So we spent, including myself, just a tremendous amount of time on those early products and on the brand. Im like, Hmm, how has that impacted [inaudible] company?, Yeah. I, at the time was busy taking a company public. How do you find those good ones? And thats really how we try to think about it. Rachel is a licensed Occupational Therapist and creator of CanDo Kiddo. But I think my wife was smarter than I was about thinking about all the complications and kind of talking through those. So then [the consideration] was, Okay, well, which international market offers us the most opportunity with the best ease of execution?, [With] Asian markets, the jury is out on figuring out what were going to do for each of those, but what we found in Europe and the UK, which I think will, in some ways be the case in Asian markets, is basically babies are babies everywhere. I love that. Whats one book thats had a big impact on you that maybe you actually keep going back to year after year, every couple of years? I mean if theres a customer who has individually had a conversation with us and often its with my co-founder, Jessica, that they might have a one on one conversation, then there will be follows and it could be that that customer even ends up with them and their child in a photo shoot and on a product. But it includes toys and books and other learning tools for your child. Got it. Which at least today when I got this, Im like, Wow. Okay. So that would be an example of the technology. So how do you think about those play kits when you expand internationally? The company said it plans to use the capital to support its global expansion, digital growth and content development for parents. A few years ago, Rolph sold it for reportedly hundreds of millions. And then, we had launched subscription. Well, thankfully, we have awesome audio engineer who can make this sound great afterwards so, cool. And it just fell flat, says Rolph.
