I'm trying to grow her and her brethren ( Penenlope, Bubble Bath, Lavender Lassie) as climbers. 19 photos. HMs tend to be arching, and can take up quite a lot of landscape, growing unsupported. Not conventional thinking, but IF there is enough space for its width, I would recommend 'Bishop Darlington' as being completely disease free HERE, and a very generous bloomer. Carol. "I wonder why your experience is so different from mine?". Perhaps in part because its flowers are more tidy than those of many others in the group. We ship quarts and gallons year-round. These include Old Garden Roses, Heritage Roses, Bermuda Roses, Earth-Kind Roses, found roses and modern roses. Lisa. Jeri- I would have room for Bishop Darlington, your pic is gorgeous btw, but I don't think I want monster size in this particular spot next the stairs. Please call or email to make arrangements. on a short fence when trained between a horizontal and 45 degree angle, it makes lots of very strong, long and robust upright laterals, is my experience. It keeps rose breeders busy trying to test roses for each climate. Always in bloom with loads of smaller flowers. My garden is in Richmond, BC just west of your nursery. I would definitely stay in the gray area (for the trim/porch, etc). The interior color of my home is a light gray (not for sure about the name of the color) on the walls, with white trim, and I love it, so elegant, in my opinion.and your house is elegant. Can anyone tell me if she is a vigorous grower? How interesting to read the varieties of thoughts on this rose. Kim reports that a lot of wichurana hybrids get crown gall for him but I have never even seen crown gall here in Australia, though I'm lead to believe it is here. It is very much like my other free standing rose, New Dawn, in that it absolutely does not need nor gets any coddling. Oh wow Cathy your Lavender Lassie and Prosperity are absolutely gorgeous! I'm glad that Compassion is healthy for you but it still shocks me as it isn't healthy here. Humidity can range from nearly 90% over night to single digit in the afternoon. Im also considering Moonlight, I love the look of the white petals with the yellow center, it has a charming look to me. See Horchow or Home Goods -- mirrors are pricey to ship -- and break -- so a local resource is best, but if you find one on line be sure to check their shipping carrier and return policies. Mildew is a problem here Especially in early spring and late summer. Modern shrubs include Buck, Austin, Delbard and rare HTs. Keeps us breeders busy too haha. But for a long time it was a wonderful plant and had big flushes like this throughout the growing season. She's still a larger rose, but I've never seen her grow to anything more than a substantial bush or very workable fluffy climber or wall shrub. Define "higher"? Erasmus, I MUST compliment you on the striking combination of colours in your picture. I have been researching for days and they all look so beautiful, it's hard to decide. I saw a picture of Ballerina flanking some steps and it looked gorgeous. I'm a card carrying Felicia lover here! She blooms much more than my others. I buy mine from thrift stores like Habitat, GoodWill, my hospital and veteran's thrifts -- and Target/HomeStore/Bed Bath and Beyond, etc. It produces pollen and forms OP hips though I have not tried to germinate any of these yet. It's been very interesting in the past year or so, learning how they have isolated fifteen races of black spot world wide, with five here in the US. Lyda Rose also looks very beautiful! It was one of the first roses I planted when we moved here. There is room for the Rose to grow large too. But, it doesn't mildew and keeps growing. White Dove for the trim. If I had space I would like to try Danae. If I had put any effort into spraying it, of course I would be disappointed. Monarda I agree with you that Buff Beauty is a beautiful rose and one that I am considering. Shelia- thanks for the beautiful pic of Felicia. Retail and mail order rose nursery. I have always dreamt of a home like this, and of course, it would have to be YELLOW!! I am in a rain forest after all, I just don't see it on Compassion.. Retail roses are grown and shipped in 5 inch bands or one gallon containers. Needmoremulch- Im glad you said Felicia has a shrubby shape, I think that would be ideal next to a well traveled area. In the Vancouver BC Canada area its highly prone to black spot and mildew, and will defoliate by early summer in most years. Ingrid I agree Ballerina would be beautiful but I have read it has no fragrance so that's a deal breaker for me. 88 favorite votes. I'm not talking about the teal green that was so popular back in the 90's..(I just wanted to mention that). The flower form is not very appealing to me but I'm sure matched to the right parent this could be overcome. After this current flush I will probably cut it (and the holly) down by about three feet, and it will probably respond by growing right back up to where it is now. Has excellent ratings on HMF (as does Buff Beauty). I can only hope mine reaches a fraction of that size in morning sun only here in Cincinnati. It has since been moved twice but has been in the same spot since 1992. Felicia would look beautiful without a doubt. And EvS sounds like a good rose too, I'll have to look into that one. for members of ARS, HRG & HRF. I'll probably get rid of the Knockout eventually. If you are looking to breed such a rose have a look at 'Pink Emely'. They are all excellent roses. I'm not sure how old my Felicia is now, maybe 15. Lisa. (Wholesale Only). Mildew is an issue in my garden, because of the big oaks surrounding it: they get mildew like mad. We test fully no spray on our roses in very challenged conditions then send the best ones to other growers like our friends in The Netherlands. I don't grow her (yet!) I hope mine will bloom as well as yours in the future. Just thought I'd reinforce your decision with a few cruddy pics of my own. Average rating: The yellows on the far wall? Your is also one of the best pictures of LL. Now if it grows that well for you I can see why it's so popular in many parts of the world. Also Danae, Prosperity, Moonlight, Bubble Bath, Nur Mahal, Cornelia. Makes four rooms, four functions, not just three. In this case if you flank the steps with single specimens of the same kind if one does not grow as big as the other then the planting will look lopsided. I am already smitten with Felicia and excited to grow her. I love my Buff Beauty, and she repeats well. It is rather spectacular here. EXCELLENT. This house is absolutely GORGEOUS!! Another radical idea is to place the sofa parallel to the windows, and to place a screen on the wall that is now above the sofa. 'Cornelia' has a history of getting very high A.R.S. So, I think I would do a light-to-medium shade of gray on all the trim, even the porch, and then put up maybe some shutters, and do them in a seafoam green color, or mint green, also the door. A second opinion is very valuable here because you are making the whole room serve the needs of your family and guests more effectively. I have Cornelia, Pink Prosperity, and Bubble Bath. As far as I am concerned, these two roses transcend any category. Erasmus that is a gorgeous picture of Lavender Lassie, thanks so much for showing us what theses roses are capable of becoming. Brad, it seems your climate and mine (Tasmania, Australia) are very similar; short growing season, cold winters, lots of rain, with a short but sometimes very hot, summer. Palatine has it but I haven't seem it on their website for a couple of years. Right now, almost a month into winter, we are freezing solid almost every clear still night and PE is covered in leaves and flowers still. . Some roses will do ok with partial shade; rugosas are pretty tough, some heirloom varieties and floribundas do ok. Zepherine Drouhin is always recommended though it does better with more than partial shade, but there are climbers and ramblers that will do fine especially if they can grow wild, tho maybe not bloom as much. Average rating: Utterly amazing. Hi there, thanks for the reply. You have never seen a plant without mildew, yet I have never seen mine with it. The "rainy season" is traditionally November through April, though we received a very late rain this year. I thInk Clymenstra is a great suggestion and one I'll will have to do more research on, I actually have Clymenstra and Nur Mahl on my list to find out more about. I don't know how many races you have in Canada. I want to plant a HM on each side of the main steps that lead up to my deck and would like something that gets tall but has a graceful habit and has a good repeat bloom and I think Felicia might be the one but would love to hear any other suggestions. Function is conversation and screening? I had another one in a different spot that was not nearly as big so for some reason that was a good spot for it, right next to the hot street. In the last pic the alchymist was having an unusually soft colored day. I think Felicia will perfect next to porch steps and I appreciate everyone's input. 'Pierre de Ronsard' (Eden Climber) is a strong and healthy rose here for the most part but does get black spot and rust and seems to have only a small window of spotlessness. It also forms many hips and the seeds germinate easily producing strong climbing seedlings. Two shades of green from your upholstery is one idea, but I would also consider two different types of carpet (textures/heights/?) What beautiful pictures of Lavender Lassie and Alchemist! Vaporvac that's so pretty! Mildew is very extreme in my climate, and black spot affects many roses. Propagation is through cuttings and budding. For a white I would probably choose Pax. You grow some incredible roses. This area gets sun from morning until around one and then gets afternoon dappled shade. I planted a Knockout next to my Felicia..the Knockout grew huge and crowded out Felicia. It's it amazing how a rose can do in other climates. Not only the thoughts vary the fragrance varies during seasons and even during the day. I don't grow it, though.I have Cornelia which I can recommend unreservedly. My favourite Hybrid Musk is Menja. If it's wafting fragrance you're after, Penelope is a good wafter for a HM. Average rating: I would dig her up.. if I could get anywhere near her to do it! Often there is more orange in it so I wouldn't go by that picture. 'Felicia' wafts in my garden, and in my opinion she has one of the best fragrances of all roses. USDA zone 9b. Luckily, it breaks at the bottom so I get to see flowers from below eye level too. I'm lucky too. "Winters" have been extremely mild in comparison to everywhere else, even the average here. In the photo I uploaded two days ago you can see the holly tree behind the flowers as well. Carol. Perhaps you could coax some of her canes onto the handrails since she's thornless. We ship bare-root roses from Weeks and David Austin Jan.- March. Is that her spring flush? I see a lot of people here grow the Hybrid Musks much better than I do. It was not my shot, nor my fence. Just a note on Penelope: I find her to be one of the shrubbier and more manageable HMs for smaller gardens and limited bed spaces. Fragrant (a comment on HMF mentions that it's wafting). Our "average annual rainfall" is just under 15", though in 2011 we received about a third of that average and in 2012, very slightly more, about 7". I'd vote for 'Cornelia' for best pink Hybrid Musk, with its' strong musk and rose wafting scent, followed by 'Felicia' which smells of watermelon to me. 10% disc. These nurseries listed below both offer this rose and help support HelpMeFind through their sponosorship. You might ask member "Organic Roses Honeybee Garden" to post some pictures of those bleached out Compassion flowers. Apart from such pairings needing a formal setting to look in context every time formal planting is attempted there is a risk that the plants used will not develop uniformly, resulting in the desired effect not be achieved. Some people find Felicia is more fragrant than Abe Darby and that's saying something. Thank you. What a gorgeous specimen of Felicia, Erasmus! That is exactly what I have pictured in my mind and I hope I can achieve the same when I plant my Felicia. According to Helpmefind, Buff Beauty grows to an arching "height of 4' to 10' (120 to 305 cm) and width of 4' to 8' (120 to 245 cm)". Reading? In fall it gets more pinkish, sometimes even with some green. The last time I was in my lamp store, another customer asked if he could purchase a lamp like mine -- I paid $15. Oh my goodness that is stunning Erasmus! The air is just too dry here. Licensed with Weeks, Delbard, Jim Bailey. But, if this were my home (wish it was!) I suspect the germination rate won't be high and that it is probably triploid as Kordes seem almost to select for triploidy on purpose. The nursery comprises two acres, nestled among walnut, fruit and citrus trees. The famous Eden climber is another one that can't really be grown here due to disease, yet I see it thriving in parts of Euroope. How does the Harkness rose Fellowship/ LIving Easy grow in your climate? I do agree that all these hybrid musks are very hard to choose from. My yard is definitely not formal it is more of a country yard with azaleas, hydrangeas, lillies and daisies in informal beds and I have been adding roses the last several years now. I am getting overwhelmed and confusing myself lol. All plant are propagated on their own roots and shipped in band pots and gallon containers, when available. I do enjoy reading this site though and comparing notes on which roses are healthy in certain climates! Mine does well in part shade, with fog/damp and temps mostly in the 53-65 range. ratings. If Alchemist can take shade and LL likes her new spot, I may have to add one. That, alone, explains why a rose completely spotless in one place is horrible in another. Never seen mildew on this rose and in my garden no significant Blackspot. The average lows weren't much less than 40F. Boncrow, I think you made a good choice! Compassion was quite healthy in my climate, but we're significantly hotter and more arid than where you live, Brad. I believe it would be hard to find art to go above your sofa that would not compete with the sofa in some manner, AND the tapestry and I would place your tapestry in the category of art. Lest it be overlooked, I still want to put in a word for Buff Beauty, one of the finest roses ever bred and strongly fragrant. One thing, the flowers of Felicia and Buff Beauty are quite a bit larger than most of the others, about 7 cm (c. three inches). I am glad to hear that Penelop can be kept shrubbier and I think that might have convinced me I need both Felicia and Penelope. Heirloom roses in Oregon and Roses of yesterday and today near Monterey are also good. I'm impressed by the beauty of Bishop Darlington. How much space do you have, horizontally? I really appreciate everyone's help and all the beautiful photographs that y'all have shared on this thread. I once got Bubble Bath and also almost immediately got rid of it. She's got a nice shrubby shape, too. -- paint to please, and check the wiring with my lamp store. I bought in 1985, a multiflora graft from Pickering Nurseries. I need a healthy pink climber to sell to our customers so I do wish Compassion would grow better here, but it's the worst of the worst hahaha. My Lavender Lassie went up into a semi-dwarf apple tree and cascades down from the top, but I don't have a good picture of that. Love your home, good luck!! These tables should be purchased before the rug. Monarda, I agree Kathleen looks beautiful and she is on my list for sure. How tall does your get to be? Larger sizes are available for pick-up. A mirror would reflect the light from the windows and repeat the other colors in the two rooms, and perhaps add width and depth to the height of this room. I'm a little farther north and a little closer to the water, however I.m guessing that the conditions would not be that different. 652 plants listed. Thank you. Shipping is available year-round, with the exception of the Christmas/New Year holidays. Perhaps paint or stain the television cabinet and the mantel -- paint the cabinet the same color as the walls, and stain the mantel a color that looks good with the stone, but is more like the other wood in the kitchen -- this mantel suggests the kitchen cabinets were originally oak. Thanks in advance and I can't wait to hear whatever one suggests! I was meaning specifically that the Select Rose Nursery is less than 43 kilometers drive from me. A radical idea may be to arrange the furniture to support two functions at the same time -- conversation AND screening. The copper fireplace screen looks custom, and complements the brick, so I would change that last -- but it is surprisingly easy to paint both metal and brick. Mine is trained against a fence and is easily kept to no more than 4 feet deep x 6 feet wide. Beautiful yellow in the kitchen offsets the mahogany/cherry wood -- trust your color instincts, but that kitchen mustard does not work as well with your daffodil yellow upholstery. I know for sure I want Felicia and Penelope, but I think I want one more to add to this area so I have some thinking to do lol. We get struck by downy mildew badly each spring and powdery mildew in the Autumn when the days are warm and the nights cold. I have never encountered such evil thorns on any hybrid musk. On another subject if you don't have a geometrically symmetric house with a corresponding formal garden layout I wouldn't plant one each of the same on each side of the steps. Felicia is my favorite for fragrance, rebloom, and being beautiful. Penelope was blooming and the scent was sweet. Usually logging out and logging back in fixes it. Here, Lavender Lassie and Buff Beauty are not Fall blooming yet. I hope if that floor is in the kitchen it is also all through the rest of the space too, Want to add the beauty of roses to your garden? We had two whole "frosts" where temps dipped to 32F and bounced right back up. It's also good to know that it doesn't have an extended vase shelflife. Try silken pine from Benjamin Moore for a light green, or Grand Teton White for an off white with green tint. http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.1236&tab=1. Felicia is a great Fall bloomer, too. Here's a a bit of Felicia to show you. Lux. If instead the plantings on each side do not consist of an attempted pairing then this possible outcome will be prevented. I also like Bubble Bath and hope someone chimes in about how it's doing for them. We had heat spells in the 80s over "winter". Retail and mail order rose nursery. This is a savannah climate. Carol- I think Penelope is beautiful and I thought about putting her in that spot but I was afraid she would be too much of a monster Rose and I wouldn't be able to contain her in that area. We are open by appointment. Orienting the sofa to the screen, and placing the other chairs back to back, on a larger rug in dark green, is an idea intended to encourage your thinking beyond the current arrangement, even if these pieces were selected and upholstered for this room. Budget lamps? Hi, I just renewed my membership and think what I paid for is a premium membership. All at different price points. I've had Penelope, and she has many fans, but she's not what I would call a dramatically beautiful rose. 361 plants listed. Pax is beautiful but ARE does not carry it and I plan on either making a trip to ARE or will order from them. Francesca has very limp-looking blooms that I don't care for. 'Felicia' and 'Penelope' grow shrubbier for me than some of the other HMs, both are fragrant and beautiful. Thank you. My plant does get some blackspot but nothing to worry about. I really appreciate all the help and all the beautiful photos of your roses, I will for sure be re-reading this thread over and over. 1311 plants listed. 3 photos. but I think she's lovely. Custom rootings by request. In fact all the HMs I got this spring seem to be good growers. This rose is a champion. Pax is one of the more beautiful whites. Not it's best photo, but she is gorgeous. But when I say it grows wide -- I really mean it: I vote Felicia. . Please call or email to make arrangements for a visit. How to begin now optimizing next year's flush for a wedding? 29 favorite votes. Mine is not fully mature yet, but I already adore her. They just never live up to the hype ('Wildcat' won the most disease resistant rose in trial a few years back at the Australian Trial grounds and I've barely seen a leaf on it here). IMHO Felicia is the better rose, here. Wow I have never seen a compassion not covered in mildew! Truly breathtaking, Erasmus. in the same color -- a carpet store can help you add a border and field with a carpet by the yard (it doesn't have to be expensive) -- but I would ask a designer to help you with the furniture placement first, to support the functions of the room, and then also to size the rug and the border of the rug, accordingly. I'd take Oldrosarian's suggestion and prune Felicia on the harder side as she matures. If you want the room to feel shorter, paint the entire fireplace wall a different color that complements the wood in the kitchen and the brick in the fireplace. If it's full shade, forget roses, plant something else or put a piece of art there. I wonder why your experience is so different from mine? Some tables, a floor or table lamp or three, would help to scale the room to size by bringing the furniture into closer proximity to each other by bringing the pieces close to a common table -- and, in that way, defining an area the same scale as the kitchen, and informal dining -- within the larger family room. Another easy, quick fix, without moving your sofa, is to consider a stock mirror, with a narrow frame, to repeat the width of the stripes in your fabric, or a series of vertical or square mirrors, perhaps mimicking the shapes and sizes of your windows elsewhere. Lisa, This second pic is from spring, before she put on much growth. How old is your Felicia and how long does it take to put on some size? I think she would be beautiful with BD next to the garage or maybe on the side of the porch, hmmmm I need to think about that lol, I have a whole other bed on the side of the porch and was planning on a few teas for that area but Penelope might need to have that area, wonder could she share it with some friends? Another vote for Felicia as she is one of the better Hybrid Musks. You are so very lucky! I looked into Lavender Lassie, but it seems she's unwilling to rebloom without winter chill. What is Lavender Lassie growing on for support? 'Manita' is a good strong super healthy pink climber, also by Kordes, that your customers might like if you are looking for such a rose. Need help choosing the color for the wrap around balcony, Need help choosing paint color for family room with yellow print sofa. Is there something else I need to do so I can see the lineages? Will report back how they fare! 24 favorite votes. My mom has Prosperity, she planted it this past May and I have been really impressed with this rose. She is growing it as a climber. And I agree that a darker green would work. Embrothium you make a good point and thanks for giving me something to think about. Beautiful home, great upholstery, and nicely done! That's my lame attempt at deer protection. If you don't prune Felicia hard then she will grow more upright if that is what you want. I see a cat, and there are beautiful end tables that also serve as pet sanctuaries. Menja is a very pretty rose, I'm not sure where to find it. The screen cabinet and the tapestry together would upscale a lower level gathering space, even if unfinished -- or an upstairs foyer. Consider placing your plasma screen on a lower, smaller piece of furniture, perhaps painted. If your not feelin' the "green", maybe something in the blue family for shutters/door.
