I would either stain it a dark colour or paint it grey or black. I have seen so many chalk painted pieces of furniture on Pinterest over the past year or so. I'm leaning more towards staining it so that the texture and pattern of the wood is visible. You Have To Try This! I say replace or paint the hardware as suggested. The first coat goes on fairly thin. With a newer one, you might want to fasten the tv to the stand somehow. Put something like stone in front, so your fire doesn't reach the wood floor. Another option would be a silver finish. 
It took me a while, but I finally realized that what I needed to do was to give my old wall unit entertainment center a makeover. Taking the doors off gives it a totally new look but you were wise to get them painted at the same time in case you ever wanted to put them back on. I do think the brass goes well with the red. I had been telling myself for a long time, that keeping the natural wood was a good thing because it added a bit of warmth to the room (and natural wood certainly does! I recently discovered that paintingis a stress reliever for me. It seems like a big update, too, on style. I added a vintage inspired furniture transfer by Iron Orchid Designs. This gets rid of dirt and grime and preps the surface for chalk paint. I simply didnt use the backer plates for the knobs when I reapplied the hardware to the cabinet doors, which adds to the updated appearance.

Use a paint brush to get in all the corners and a mini foam roller to cover the flat surfaces. I dont have a recommendation for a particular brand of brush or roller. It seems like you have a lot of neutrals and my unprofessional eye is looking for a splash of wow in there somewhere. I bought the dark wax as well but havent decided if I want to use it quite yet. Great makeover and so fast and easy! Cold and frosty or hot and humid, this formula goes on smooth and resists fading and peeling. To be doubly sure though, I recommend talking with the folks at Sherwin Williams. Your room looks more on the contemporary side, so I would suggest painting it a rich red or black to match what you already have in your room. It is.
